Revolving Ball Handle Dimensions (DIN 98, 16 to 36 mm)
Guide ยท Updated October 28, 2026
DIN 98 covers revolving ball handles used on handwheels and cranks, grip diameter 16 to 36 mm, Form D (plain pin) and Form E (threaded stud M6 to M16). Every value below agrees across the DIN 98 (2003) table, the Elesa+Ganter DIN 98 catalog, the Ganter DIN 98 product table and the fasteners.eu DIN 98 table. Skipped: profile radii, d5, l4, hex depth and weights. Check the current edition or your supplier for critical work.

Step by step
- Pick the handle size: Choose grip diameter d1 from 16 to 36 mm to suit the handwheel or crank.
- Pick the form: Form D has a plain pin d2 (h8) to press in or rivet; Form E has a threaded stud d3.
- Size the hole: Form D: drill and ream for pin d2. Form E: tap the rim or crank arm for d3.
- Check the collar: Collar d4 (h13) and collar length l3 sit against the rim; give them a flat seat.
- Tighten it: Form E has an internal hex of size s in the end, so you can screw it in with an Allen key.
- Order it: Designate as Ballengriff DIN 98 E 32 ST (form, grip diameter, material).
DIN 98 revolving handle dimensions (mm)
Columns: grip diameter d1, pin d2 (h8, Form D), thread d3 (Form E), collar d4 (h13), overall length l1 (approx.), thread or pin length l2, collar length l3 and internal hex s.
- d1 | d2 (D) | d3 (E) | d4 | l1 | l2 | l3 | Hex s
- 16 | 7 | M6 | 10 | 49 | 11 | 5.5 | 3
- 20 | 8 | M8 | 13 | 61 | 13 | 6 | 4
- 25 | 10 | M10 | 16 | 75 | 14 | 8 | 5
- 32 | 13 | M12 | 20 | 95 | 21 | 10.5 | 6
- 36 | 16 | M16 | 22 | 106 | 26 | 11 | 8
Worked example: 200 mm handwheel
A DIN 950 handwheel of 200 mm takes an M10 handle thread, so use DIN 98 E 25: 75 mm long, 16 mm collar, 14 mm of M10 thread, tightened with a 5 mm Allen key. Tap the rim at least 14 mm deep.
Common problems
- Handle will not spin: grip pressed too far onto the axle (Form D); back it off slightly.
- Handle unscrews: add thread locker on the Form E stud.
- Handle wobbles: collar seat not flat; spot-face the rim.
FAQ
What is a DIN 98 revolving handle?
A ball-shaped grip that spins freely on its axle, fitted to handwheels (DIN 950, DIN 3319) and cranks (DIN 468, DIN 469) so your hand does not twist while turning.
Is DIN 98 a handwheel?
No. DIN 98 is the revolving handle. The spoked handwheel itself is DIN 950, and DIN 98 handles are fitted to its rim in Type D.
Form D vs Form E?
Form D has a plain cylindrical pin to press in or rivet. Form E has a threaded stud and an internal hex for an Allen key.
What material?
Form D steel; Form E steel, aluminum, phenolic or thermoplastic. Catalog plastic versions stop at 32 mm.
What was skipped?
Profile radii, d5, l4, hex depth t and weights. Only the DIN sheet lists them, so we left them out.
