Fixed Ball Handle Dimensions (DIN 39, 16 to 36 mm)
Guide ยท Updated October 28, 2026
DIN 39 covers fixed (non-rotating) ball handles for handwheels and cranks, grip diameter 16 to 36 mm, Form D (plain pin) and Form E (threaded stud M6 to M16). It is the fixed partner of the DIN 98 revolving handle and fits DIN 950 handwheels Type F. Every value below agrees across the fasteners.eu DIN 39 table and the Ganter / Elesa+Ganter DIN 39 catalogs, with grip, thread and length also matching the Kipp DIN 39 Form E handles listed on its DIN 950 handwheels. Skipped: Form D pin d2, the 10 and 13 mm sizes, and weights. Check your supplier for critical work.

Step by step
- Pick the handle size: Choose grip diameter d1 from 16 to 36 mm to suit the handwheel or crank.
- Pick the form: Form E has a threaded stud d3; Form D has a plain pin to press in or rivet.
- Tap the rim: For Form E, tap the rim or crank arm for d3 at least l2 deep.
- Check the collar: Collar d4 (h13) and collar length l3 sit against the rim; give them a flat seat.
- Tighten it: Steel Form E has an internal hex in the end for an Allen key.
- Order it: Designate as DIN 39-ST-25-E (material, grip diameter, form).
DIN 39 fixed ball handle dimensions (mm)
Columns: grip diameter d1, thread d3 (Form E), collar d4 (h13), overall length l1 (approx.), thread length l2, collar length l3 and internal hex.
- d1 | Thread d3 | d4 | l1 | l2 | l3 | Hex
- 16 | M6 | 10 | 50 | 11 | 7 | 3
- 20 | M8 | 13 | 64 | 13 | 8 | 4
- 25 | M10 | 16 | 80 | 14 | 10 | 5
- 32 | M12 | 20 | 100 | 21 | 13 | 6
- 36 | M16 | 22 | 112 | 26 | 14 | 8
Worked example: 250 mm handwheel
A DIN 950 250 mm wheel has an M12 tapped rim, so a fixed handle is DIN 39-ST-32-E: 100 mm long, 20 mm collar 13 mm long, 21 mm of M12 thread, 6 mm hex. Tap the rim at least 21 mm deep.
Common problems
- Handle unscrews: add thread locker on the stud.
- Hand twists on a fast crank: swap to a DIN 98 revolving handle.
- Handle wobbles: collar seat not flat; spot-face the rim.
FAQ
What is a DIN 39 fixed handle?
A ball-shaped grip that does not rotate, screwed or pressed into a handwheel rim or crank arm. It is the fixed partner of the DIN 98 revolving handle.
DIN 39 vs DIN 98?
DIN 39 is fixed; DIN 98 spins on its axle so your hand does not twist. They share thread sizes and collars, but DIN 39 is slightly longer (for example 80 vs 75 mm at 25 mm).
Which handwheels take DIN 39?
DIN 950 spoked handwheels Type F use a DIN 39 fixed handle; Type D uses DIN 98.
Why is the Form D pin size missing?
Only catalogs from one supplier group list the Form D pin d2, so we left it out. Form E values are in all sources.
What else was skipped?
The 10 and 13 mm sizes on the official sheet, plastic and stainless limits and weights.
