Guide ยท Updated October 28, 2026
DIN 316 covers wing screws with rounded wings, M4 to M16. Max sizes agree across DIV Group, Woodstock Industrial and Muxbolts (boss sizes from DIV and Muxbolts); catalog sizes agree across Wegertseder and BTS Saarburg. Dashed cells have only one source.

Step by step
- Find the thread: Pick the row for your tapped hole, M4 to M16.
- Check the clearance: e max is the full wing span and h max the head height; allow both around the screw.
- Check your supplier: Many cast heads are a little smaller; the last two columns show the common catalog sizes.
- Pick the length: Length l is measured under the boss.
DIN 316 wing screw dimensions (mm)
Columns: thread d, pitch P, wing span e max, head height h max, boss diameter d2 max, boss height m max, then wing span e and height h from Wegertseder and BTS catalogs.
- Size | P | e max | h max | d2 max | m max | e (catalog) | h (catalog)
- M4 | 0.7 | 20 | 10.5 | 8 | 4.6 | 20 | 9.5
- M5 | 0.8 | 26 | 13 | 11 | 6.5 | 25 | 12
- M6 | 1 | 33 | 17 | 13 | 8 | 31.5 | 16
- M8 | 1.25 | 39 | 20 | 16 | 10 | 37 | 19
- M10 | 1.5 | 51 | 25 | 20 | 12 | 49.5 | 24
- M12 | 1.75 | 65 | 33.5 | 23 | 14 | 63.5 | 32.3
- M16 | 2 | โ | โ | โ | โ | 71.5 | 36.3
Worked example: M6 screw
An M6 DIN 316 wing screw is up to 33 mm across the wings and 17 mm tall, on a boss up to 13 mm wide. Leave about 35 mm of finger room across the screw.
Common problems
- Cast wing snapped: don't use pliers; these are for hand torque only.
- Wings hit a wall: check e max against nearby parts.
- Screw vibrates loose: add a spring washer or thread locker.
FAQ
What is DIN 316 used for?
Hand-tightened screws on covers, clamps and adjustable fittings that are opened often.
Why are there two sets of e and h?
DIV Group, Woodstock and Muxbolts list the max sizes (e.g. M6 e 33, h 17 mm). Wegertseder and BTS list smaller head sizes (M6 e 31.5, h 16 mm). Both are shown and labelled; use max for clearance.
Why is the M16 max row blank?
Only one source lists M16 max values, so they are dashed; M16 catalog sizes match Wegertseder and BTS.
DIN 316 vs DIN 315?
DIN 315 is a wing nut with the same rounded wing shape; DIN 316 is a one-piece wing screw.
