Guide · Updated October 28, 2026
ISO 7046-1 covers countersunk flat head screws with type H (Phillips) or type Z (Pozidriv) cross recess, M1.6 to M10, steel class 4.8; it replaced DIN 965. Values agree across the ISO 7046-1:2011 published table and fasten.it (DIN EN ISO 7046-1:2011). Nominal values.

Step by step
- Find the thread: Pick the row for your thread size, M1.6 to M10.
- Cut the countersink: Use a 90° countersink cut to just over dk so the head sits flush.
- Pick the bit: Recess No. gives the bit size: PH2 or PZ2 for M3.5 to M5.
- Match H or Z: Type H is Phillips, type Z is Pozidriv; the recess diameter m differs slightly.

Columns: thread d, pitch P, actual head diameter dk max, head height k max, cross recess No., recess diameter m (ref.) for type H and type Z.
- Size | P | dk | k | No. | m H | m Z
- M1.6 | 0.35 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 1.6 | 1.6
- M2 | 0.4 | 3.8 | 1.2 | 0 | 1.9 | 1.9
- M2.5 | 0.45 | 4.7 | 1.5 | 1 | 2.9 | 2.8
- M3 | 0.5 | 5.5 | 1.65 | 1 | 3.2 | 3
- (M3.5) | 0.6 | 7.3 | 2.35 | 2 | 4.4 | 4.1
- M4 | 0.7 | 8.4 | 2.7 | 2 | 4.6 | 4.4
- M5 | 0.8 | 9.3 | 2.7 | 2 | 5.2 | 4.9
- M6 | 1 | 11.3 | 3.3 | 3 | 6.8 | 6.6
- M8 | 1.25 | 15.8 | 4.65 | 4 | 8.9 | 8.8
- M10 | 1.5 | 18.3 | 5 | 4 | 10 | 9.8
Worked example: M5 flush hinge screw
An M5 ISO 7046 head is 9.3 mm across and 2.7 mm deep. Cut a 90° countersink to about 9.5 mm so it sits flush. It takes a No. 2 bit (PH2 for type H, PZ2 for type Z).
Common problems
- Head sits proud: countersink cut for an older DIN 965 head, or at 82° (inch); use 90° and size it to dk.
- Bit cams out: PH bit in a PZ recess or the wrong size; check the recess No. and type.
- Head snaps off: class 4.8 countersunk heads are weak; do not over-torque or use them for structural loads.
FAQ
Is DIN 965 the same as ISO 7046?
ISO 7046 replaced DIN 965. Older DIN 965 heads are smaller from M3.5 up (like DIN 963 vs ISO 2009), so check old stock.
What are Part 1 and Part 2?
ISO 7046-1 covers steel class 4.8 screws; Part 2 covers higher classes and stainless with a deeper head. This chart is Part 1.
Is the head the same as ISO 2009 slotted countersunk?
Yes. dk and k match ISO 2009; only the drive differs. ISO 10642 socket countersunk heads are different.
Why does one source give M3.5 k as 1.35?
That is a typo; the ISO table and neighbouring sizes give 2.35, which is used here.
