Phillips Pan Head Screw Dimensions (ISO 7045 / DIN 7985, M1.6 to M10)

Guide · Updated October 28, 2026

ISO 7045 covers pan head screws with type H (Phillips) or type Z (Pozidriv) cross recess, M1.6 to M10, product grade A; it replaced DIN 7985. Values agree across the ISO 7045:2011 published table and the Lubker metric pan head datasheet. Nominal values; recess data is type H.

Step by step

  1. Find the thread: Pick the row for your thread size, M1.6 to M10.
  2. Pick the bit: The recess No. column gives the Phillips bit: PH2 for M3.5 to M5, PH3 for M6.
  3. Check clearance: Use dk and k to check the head clears nearby parts.
  4. Check the drive type: Type H is Phillips; type Z is Pozidriv. Use the matching bit.

ISO 7045 Phillips pan head screw dimensions (mm)

Columns: thread d, pitch P, head diameter dk max, head height k max, cross recess No., type H recess diameter m (ref.), type H penetration depth min–max, thread length b min.

Worked example: M4 enclosure screw

An M4 ISO 7045 head is 8 mm across and 3.1 mm high, so leave 3.5 mm of clearance above the panel. It takes a PH2 bit; the recess is about 4.4 mm across.

Common problems

FAQ

Is DIN 7985 the same as ISO 7045?

Close but not identical. ISO 7045 replaced DIN 7985. DIN 7985 has a larger head at M3 (dk 6 vs 5.6) and M5 (10 vs 9.5), and uses a No. 1 recess at M2.

Phillips or slotted pan head?

ISO 7045 pan heads are taller than ISO 1580 slotted pan heads (M4: k 3.1 vs 2.4) but have the same head diameter.

What is penetration?

How deep a gauge sinks into the recess. The range is for type H (Phillips).

Can I use a Pozidriv bit?

Only on type Z screws. A PZ bit in a PH recess cams out and damages it.
