Slotted Dog Point Set Screw Dimensions (ISO 7435 / DIN 417, M1.6 to M12)

ISO 7435 covers slotted set screws with long dog point (DIN 417), from M1.6 to M12. Values agree across the ISO 7435:2024 preview (iTeh), fasten.it DIN 417 and fasteners.eu EN 27435, and conflicting cells are dashed. Check your supplier for critical work.

Step by step
- Read the thread: Measure the major diameter and pitch. The chart covers coarse M1.6 to M12.
- Pick the screwdriver: Choose a blade that fills the slot width n, at least n nom thick.
- Drill for the dog: Drill the locating hole slightly over dp max, and deeper than z max.
- Mind the torque: A slot carries much less torque than a hex socket. Use ISO 4028 dog point socket screws for higher loads.
- Lock it: Add threadlocker for vibration.

Worked example: M6 slotted dog point
An M6 slotted dog point has a 3.7 to 4.0 mm dog that is 3.0 to 3.25 mm long. Drill the locating hole about 4.1 mm and at least 3.5 mm deep. The slot is 1.06 to 1.2 mm wide.
Common problems
- Dog will not enter: the hole is undersize or out of line.
- Slot cams out: use a blade that fills the slot, or switch to an ISO 4028 socket screw.
- Screw loosens: add threadlocker.
FAQ
What is ISO 7435?
The slotted set screw with dog point. DIN 417 is the older equivalent. The cylindrical dog locates in a drilled hole or a slot.
Long or short dog?
This chart gives the long dog used on regular lengths. ISO 7435:2024 adds a short dog for the shortest screws, but the free preview does not show those values.
Why are M1.6 and M2 dp min dashed?
ISO 7435:2024 gives 0.66 and 0.86, while the DIN 417 / EN 27435 tables give 0.55 and 0.75, so those cells are dashed.
Where do the z values come from?
fasten.it (DIN 417) and fasteners.eu (EN 27435) agree on every z value. The ISO preview cuts off before the z rows.
What was skipped?
The short dog z and the two dp min cells.
