Values agree across the ISO 7436:2024 preview (iTeh), Fuller Fasteners DIN 438 and Engineering Hardware ISO 7436, and fasteners.eu matches for M3 to M10. Conflicting cells are dashed. Check your supplier for critical work.

Step by step
- Read the thread: Measure the major diameter and pitch. The chart covers coarse M1.6 to M12.
- Pick the screwdriver: Choose a blade that fills the slot width n.
- Prepare the shaft: The cup rim bites the shaft. Leave the shaft bare where it bites, or add a shallow flat.
- Mind the torque: A slot carries little torque. Use an ISO 4029 cup point socket screw for higher holding force.
- Lock it: Add threadlocker for vibration.

Worked example: M6 slotted cup point
An M6 slotted cup point has a 2.75 to 3.0 mm cup rim. The slot is 1.06 to 1.2 mm wide and 1.6 to 2.0 mm deep, so use a 1.0 mm blade.
Common problems
- Shaft slips: the cup rim is dull, so replace the screw.
- Slot cams out: use a blade that fills the slot, or switch to ISO 4029.
- Burr on the shaft: add a flat where the cup bites.
FAQ
What is ISO 7436?
The slotted set screw with cup point. DIN 438 is the older equivalent. The sharp cup rim bites into the shaft.
Why is M12 dz min dashed?
ISO 7436:2024 gives 7.64, while the Fuller Fasteners and Engineering Hardware DIN 438 tables give 7.7, so that cell is dashed.
M12 t min 2.5 or 2.8?
A few short supplier tables list 2.5. ISO 7436:2024, Fuller and Engineering Hardware all give 2.8, so the chart uses the majority value, 2.8.
What is dz?
The cup diameter at the tip.
Socket alternative?
Use ISO 4029 / DIN 916, the hex socket cup point.
