Step by step
- Check the thread: Match d1 and pitch to the tapped hole; the hole must be at least l deep.
- Seat the collar: Screw the bolt in until the collar sits flat on a machined face.
- Check the angle: Rated load drops sharply when the pull is off the bolt axis; see the DIN 580 load table.
- Inspect: Do not use a bolt with a bent eye, worn thread or damaged collar.

Worked example: M12 eye bolt
An M12 DIN 580 eye bolt has a 30 mm collar, a 54 mm eye with a 30 mm opening, and stands 53 mm tall. Tap the hole at least 20.5 mm deep so the collar seats.
Common problems
- Collar will not seat: the tapped hole is too shallow or the face is not flat.
- Eye faces the wrong way: never back the bolt out to align it; use a shim washer as the maker allows or a swivel point.
- Bent shank: the load was pulled at a side angle beyond the rating.
FAQ
What is DIN 580?
A forged lifting eye bolt with a collar, for mounting permanently on parts such as motors and gearboxes for transport.
Why is the collar important?
The collar must seat flat on the part; a bolt standing proud can bend under a side load.
Why are m and e dashed above M36?
Only one source gives m and e above M36, so we dash them.
Where are the load ratings?
Load ratings are not included here. Use the DIN 580 table or the maker data for your bolt and sling angle.
