Three-Wire Thread Measurement Calculator
The three-wire method checks a thread's pitch diameter with a micrometer over three precision wires. For 60° threads (Unified inch and ISO metric) the reading over wires is M = E − 0.866025 P + 3W, where E is the pitch diameter, P the pitch and W the wire diameter. The best wire (contacts at the pitch line) is W = 0.57735 P.
Worked examples (basic pitch diameter, best wire)
| Thread | Basic E | Best wire | M over wires |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4-20 UNC | 0.21752 in | 0.02887 in | 0.26083 in |
| M10 × 1.5 | 9.0257 mm | 0.8660 mm | 10.3248 mm |
Notes
- Basic pitch diameter E = D − 0.649519 P (ASME B1.1 Unified, ISO 724 metric). Your gauge limits come from the thread class (2A, 3A, 6g…); enter that E above to get the matching M.
- Usable wires run from 0.505182 P to 1.010363 P; the best wire minimises the effect of flank-angle error.
- This simple formula ignores lead angle. It is the standard shop formula for single-start threads with a lead angle under about 5°; multi-start and Acme threads need the corrected formulas.
- Set or check the micrometer against a gage block stack of about the expected M.
