Square Weld Nut Dimensions (DIN 928, M4 to M16)

Guide ยท Updated October 28, 2026

DIN 928 covers square weld nuts with four weld projections, sizes M4 to M16 coarse and M8 to M16 fine pitch, product grade A. Values agree across the fasteners.eu DIN 928 table, the Aspen Fasteners DIN 928 spec sheet and the DIN 928 standard text published by FCM Terminal. Square size, corners, height, d4, h1 and h2 min match in all three; b, hole d2 and h2 max match in fasteners.eu and the standard text. Conflicts: M14 nut height is 11.4 mm in fasteners.eu and Aspen but 11.0 mm in the standard text, so we leave it out; the standard text shows M16 e min as 23, which is impossible below s = 24, so we use 32 from the other two. Not shown: thread countersink d3 and the 7/16-20 UNF seat belt sizes. Check the current edition or your supplier for critical work.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the size: DIN 928 covers square weld nuts M4 to M16 coarse and M8 to M16 fine pitch, product grade A. M14 and M16 are non-preferred.
  2. Read the square: s is the square width: M6 10 mm, M8 14 mm, M10 17 mm, M12 19 mm.
  3. Drill the sheet hole: The pilot locates in hole d2 (H13): M6 7.5 mm, M8 10 mm, M10 12.5 mm, M12 13.5 mm.
  4. Check the height: m is the nut height: M8 6.5 mm, M10 8 mm, M12 9.5 mm.
  5. Know the projections: Four corner projections h1 tall (+/-0.1) melt down during resistance welding; h2 is the pilot height range.
  6. Allow for corners: e min is the corner width: M8 18 mm, M10 22 mm. Leave that much clear space around the hole.

DIN 928 square weld nut dimensions (mm)

Columns: thread size (fine pitch in brackets), square width s (h14), width across corners e min, nut height m (h14), projection width b, pilot / sheet hole d2 (H13), d4 min, projection height h1, pilot height h2 min-max. M14 height: 11.4 vs 11.0 mm conflict between sources, so not listed.

Worked example: bolt length into an M8 square weld nut

A 3 mm bracket bolted to 1.5 mm sheet with an M8 DIN 928 nut behind. Bracket + sheet + nut height m = 3 + 1.5 + 6.5 = 11 mm, so an M8 x 12 gives full engagement with 1 mm past the nut; an M8 x 16 sticks out 5 mm, fine only if nothing sits behind. Remember the pilot sits inside the sheet hole, so it adds no length.

FAQ

What is a DIN 928 weld nut?

A square nut with a weld projection at each of its four corners and a short pilot. The pilot drops into a hole in sheet metal and the projections are resistance welded.

What hole size for a DIN 928 weld nut?

Hole d2 (H13): M4 5 mm, M5 6 mm, M6 7.5 mm, M8 10 mm, M10 12.5 mm, M12 13.5 mm.

How is DIN 928 different from DIN 929?

DIN 928 is square with four projections; DIN 929 is hexagonal with three. The square nut has more contact area and resists turning in the sheet.

Does DIN 928 include fine thread?

Yes: M8 x 1, M10 x 1.25, M10 x 1, M12 x 1.5, M12 x 1.25, M14 x 1.5 and M16 x 1.5 share the coarse dimensions.

What is the 7/16-20 UNF size in DIN 928?

DIN 928 also lists two 7/16-20 UNF variants for seat belt anchorages in vehicles. We leave them out of this metric chart.

What sheet thickness does DIN 928 suit?

One supplier lists roughly 0.75 to 3 mm for M4 up to 1.5 to 5 mm for M12, but we could not confirm this in a second source; check your supplier.
