Step by step
- Pick the bolt size: Choose M12 to M36 to match the DIN 6914 HV bolt.
- Read the hole: Hole d1 min is the nominal; max gives the tolerance.
- Read the OD: Outside diameter d2 max is the nominal.
- Check thickness: Thickness h is 3 to 6 mm with about plus or minus 0.3 to 0.6 mm.
- Face the chamfer: Fit the chamfered side toward the bolt head or nut so it clears the under-head radius.
- Order it: Designate as Washer DIN 6916 - 21 - HV (hole size).

Worked example: M20 HV joint
An M20 DIN 6916 washer has a 21 mm hole, 37 mm OD and is 4 mm thick (3.7 to 4.3 mm). With one washer under the nut, add 4 mm to the grip when choosing DIN 6914 bolt length.
Common problems
- Washer cupped or galled: chamfer installed the wrong way, or not a hardened HV washer.
- Lost preload: mixing non-HV washers into an HV set.
- Bolt too short: washer thickness not counted.
FAQ
What is DIN 6916?
A hardened, chamfered round washer for high-strength preloaded (HV) structural bolting with DIN 6914 bolts and DIN 6915 nuts. It is now replaced by EN 14399-6.
ISO 7416 or ISO 7415?
ISO 7416 is the match for DIN 6916 (chamfered HV washers). ISO 7415 covers a different structural washer and is not the cross-reference here.
Which side faces the bolt?
The chamfered side faces the bolt head or nut.
What was skipped?
Chamfer maximum, the outer chamfer e and weights, because not enough sources list them the same way.
DIN 6916 vs DIN 7989?
DIN 7989 is a thick 8 mm washer for ordinary steel work. DIN 6916 is hardened and thinner, made for preloaded HV joints.
