How to Use a Surface Gage

Guide ยท Updated October 27, 2026

A surface gage is a base with a spindle and an adjustable scriber or indicator holder. It transfers heights from a reference to the work: for scribing layout lines, checking parallelism, or setting up parts.

Step by step

  1. Clean the plate: Wipe the surface plate and the gage base.
  2. Set rough height: Set the scriber close to the height using a combination square rule.
  3. Fine-set: Use the fine adjuster to bring the point to a gage block stack's height.
  4. Scribe: Slide the gage along with the scriber trailing slightly, using light pressure.
  5. Or indicate: Swap in an indicator and sweep it across the part to check height or parallelism.

Worked example: scribing a line 1.375 in up

Wring a 1.375 in stack (1.000 + 0.375) on the surface plate. Set the scriber point lightly on top of the stack with the fine-adjust screw, then slide the base across to the blued part and scribe. The line lands within the width of the scribe mark of 1.375 in if the base and plate are clean. To check, scribe a short line on a scrap block and measure it with a height gage or caliper depth.

Using it as an indicator holder

Swap the scriber for a test indicator to check a part is parallel to the plate: zero on one end, sweep to the other. A reading of 0.0012 in over 6.000 in is 0.0002 in per inch of taper.

More common problems

Line wanders: base rocking on a burr. Height drifts: clamp nut loose on the spindle. Faint line: dull scriber; hone the point.

FAQ

What is a surface gage used for?

Scribing layout lines at a set height, and holding an indicator to compare heights and check parallelism.

Surface gage vs height gage?

A height gage reads height directly. A surface gage transfers a height you set from a rule or gage blocks.

How do I set an exact height?

Fine-set the point on a gage block stack. Build the stack with the free calculator at gageblockcalc.com.

How do I avoid scribing errors?

Keep the base flat on the plate, use a sharp point and use light pressure.
