How to Use a Power Tapper

Guide ยท Updated October 28, 2026

Power tapping is faster and straighter than hand tapping. An articulating tapping arm keeps the tap square over a large area, a reversing tapping head lets a drill press or mill tap without reversing the spindle, and a tension-compression holder floats to match the tap lead on CNC or manual feeds.

Check threads with a gage

Use a go/no-go thread plug gage on the first part. The free Gage Block Calculator builds the stack.

Step by step

  1. Pick the tap: Spiral point for through holes, spiral flute for blind holes, forming taps for ductile metals.
  2. Drill the right size: Use the tap drill from a chart, chamfer the hole.
  3. Set speed: Use a tapping speed chart; slower than drilling.
  4. Set depth: Use a depth stop with clearance for the tap chamfer.
  5. Lubricate: Tapping fluid suited to the material.
  6. Feed lightly: Let the tap pull itself in; with a reversing head, lift to reverse.
  7. Gage: Check the first holes with a go/no-go gage.

Worked example

Tapping 1/4-20 in 6061 aluminum with a spiral point HSS tap at 50 SFM: RPM = 3.82 ร— 50 รท 0.250 = 764 RPM; a reversing head at that speed is fast, so many shops start around 400โ€“500 RPM. Feed per rev must equal the lead: 0.050 in, so at 500 RPM the feed is 25 in/min. A tension-compression holder covers small mismatches between spindle feed and the tap lead.

Arms vs heads

Tapping arms are best for large plates and many holes at different spots. Tapping heads use the drill press or mill spindle and give consistent depth.

Common problems

Broken taps come from bottoming out, chips packing in blind holes or a misaligned tap. Oversize threads come from axial pressure pushing the tap. Torn threads mean dull taps or no lubricant.

Tips

Quick shop check

Tapping speed for HSS taps in mild steel is about 30โ€“50 SFM. For a 1/4-20 tap at 40 SFM: RPM = 3.82 ร— 40 รท 0.25 โ‰ˆ 611 RPM; many shops start around 400โ€“500 RPM. Feed must match pitch: 1 รท 20 = 0.050 in per revolution. A tension-compression holder helps when feed does not match exactly.

FAQ

What is a tapping head?

A spindle attachment that reverses the tap when you lift.

What is a tension-compression holder?

A floating holder that lets the tap follow its own lead.

Which tap for blind holes?

Spiral flute.

How fast should I tap?

Use a tapping speed chart; slower than drilling.

Why did my tap break?

Bottoming, chip packing or misalignment.
