How to Use a Mill Drawbar

Guide · Updated October 28, 2026

On a manual knee mill the drawbar pulls the collet or tool holder up into the spindle taper. Get it snug, not cranked; most tool pullout is from a dirty taper or a loose bar, not from too little torque.

Check runout after tool changes

Indicate the cutter after seating; verify your indicator on gage blocks. The free Gage Block Calculator builds the stack.

Step by step

  1. Clean the taper: Wipe the spindle and collet tapers; a chip causes runout and slipping.
  2. Align the key: Line up the R8 collet slot with the spindle key and push up.
  3. Thread the drawbar: Spindle brake or lock on; thread the bar in by hand several full turns.
  4. Snug it: Tighten with a wrench to firm hand tightness, about 25–35 ft·lb on an R8 knee mill.
  5. Insert the cutter: For collets, insert the tool before final tightening so the collet closes on it.
  6. To release: Loosen a turn or two, then tap the top of the bar with a soft mallet to pop the taper.
  7. Check runout: Indicate the shank or cutter.

Worked example

A 7/16-20 drawbar has a pitch of 1 ÷ 20 = 0.050 in. Threading in 6 full turns engages 6 × 0.050 = 0.300 in of thread, about 0.7 × diameter, which is enough. If the bar only takes 3 turns (0.150 in), the collet is cocked or the threads are dirty; stop and clean. Snugging to 30 ft·lb with a 10 in wrench is about 36 lb at the end of the handle.

Why cutters pull out

A climb cut with a helix pulls the end mill down out of an R8 collet. Use an end mill holder with a set screw for heavy cuts, or keep the collet and taper clean.

Common problems

Slipping means oily or worn collets. A bar that will not release needs one turn loosened then a sharp tap. Galled threads mean cross threading or no lube.

Tips

Worked example: a tool that will not release

An R8 end mill holder stays stuck after the drawbar is loosened about one turn. With the spindle locked, back the drawbar out roughly two more turns so a few threads stay engaged, then give the head one sharp tap with a soft-faced or dead-blow mallet to break the taper. Remove the holder, wipe the taper and spindle bore clean, and on refit snug the drawbar firmly by hand wrench only; over-tightening is what made it stick.

FAQ

How tight should a drawbar be?

Firmly snug, about 25–35 ft·lb on an R8 mill.

How do I release a stuck R8?

Loosen a turn and tap the top of the drawbar.

Why does my end mill pull out?

Oily taper or collet, or a heavy helix cut; use a set screw holder.

Can I use an impact on a drawbar?

Power drawbars are made for it; a handheld impact can overtighten.

What thread is an R8 drawbar?

Usually 7/16-20 UNF.
