How to Use a Bevel Protractor
Guide · Updated October 28, 2026
A universal bevel protractor measures angles to 5 minutes of arc (1/12°) with a vernier, or about 0.01–0.05° with a digital head. It is the go-to tool for checking chamfers, bevels and angled faces that a combination square cannot reach.
Need a precise angle?
For tighter angles, set a sine bar with an exact stack from the free Gage Block Calculator.
Step by step
- Clean the blade and stock: Wipe the stock, blade and part; a chip under the stock adds error.
- Seat the stock: Hold the stock firmly flat on the reference face of the part.
- Bring the blade to the angle: Loosen the lock, swing the blade onto the angled face, and look for no light between blade and part.
- Lock it: Tighten the dial lock (and fine-adjust if fitted), then lift the tool off.
- Read degrees: Read the whole degrees on the main dial at the vernier zero.
- Read minutes: Find the vernier line that lines up exactly with a main scale line, reading in the same direction as the degrees, and add 5 minutes per line.
Worked example
The vernier zero sits just past 37° on the main dial, reading clockwise. Counting clockwise on the vernier, the 25 line lines up exactly. Reading = 37° 25′ (37.42°).
If the part has an obtuse angle, the tool can show the supplement: a face at 142° 35′ reads as 37° 25′ on the dial. Always ask whether the angle you want is acute or obtuse; 180° − 37° 25′ = 142° 35′.
Accuracy limits
A vernier bevel protractor is good to about ±5′. Over a 2 in face, 5′ is about 0.003 in of rise, so for tighter angles use a sine bar with gage blocks and an indicator.
Tips
- Use the acute-angle attachment for angles under 90° that the stock cannot reach.
- Read the vernier in the same direction the main scale is counting from zero.

FAQ
How accurate is a bevel protractor?
A vernier universal bevel protractor reads to 5 minutes of arc (1/12°). Digital models display finer, but the mechanical accuracy is similar.
How do you read a bevel protractor vernier?
Read whole degrees at the vernier zero, then find the vernier line that aligns with a main scale line in the same direction, and add 5 minutes per line.
Why does my protractor show the wrong angle?
It may be showing the supplementary angle. Subtract the reading from 180° if the angle is obtuse.
Bevel protractor or sine bar?
Use the protractor for quick checks to about 5 minutes; use a sine bar and gage blocks for precise angles.
Is there a free calculator for sine bar stacks?
Yes. AskMachinist has a free sine bar calculator, and the Gage Block Calculator at gageblockcalc.com builds the stack, free with no login.
