How to Protect Finished Parts and Gages from Rust
Guide · Updated October 28, 2026
Bare steel rusts from moisture plus salts. The two biggest causes in a shop are fingerprints and condensation when cold steel meets warm, humid air.
Protect your gage blocks
Gage blocks need the same care. The free Gage Block Calculator builds the stack.
Step by step
- Clean: Remove coolant and fingerprints with a solvent or cleaner.
- Dry: Dry completely; water trapped in holes rusts first.
- Protect: Apply a rust preventive: light oil, a thin-film preventive, or a wax-type for storage.
- Wrap: Use VCI paper or bags for storage.
- Store: Store at steady temperature; avoid cold floors and outside walls.
- Handle: Wear gloves or wipe after handling.
- Check: Inspect stored parts periodically.
Worked example: dew point
Shop air at 70°F (21.1°C) and 60% relative humidity has a dew point of about 55.5°F (13.0°C) by the Magnus formula. A steel part brought in from a 45°F truck is below the dew point, so water condenses on it within minutes. Leave it wrapped until it warms past 56°F, or wipe and oil it as soon as it is dry.
Fingerprints
Sweat contains salts and acids that etch steel within hours. Gage blocks show fingerprints as rust spots overnight in humid shops.
Types of preventive
Light oil: short term, easy to remove. Thin-film solvent-based preventives: dry or soft film, weeks to months. Wax or heavy grease: long storage, harder to remove.
Coolant
Water-based coolant at the right concentration contains rust inhibitors; too lean and parts rust. Check concentration.
Common problems
Rust under oil: part not dry before oiling. Rust spots in rings: fingerprints. Rust only in a stack: moisture trapped between surfaces.
Tips
- Gage block care: gage block care.
- Coolant: coolant concentration.
- Storage: gage block storage.
Quick shop check
Clean parts of coolant residue before oiling; water-based coolant left in crevices rusts steel fast. For short storage, a light oil or rust preventive spray is usually enough; for longer storage, use a heavier preventive or VCI bags. Wrap gage blocks with gage-block oil or grease after use.
FAQ
Why do parts rust overnight?
Fingerprints or condensation.
What is dew point?
The temperature where moisture condenses.
Best preventive for storage?
Wax-type or VCI wrapping.
Does coolant cause rust?
If too lean.
How do I protect gage blocks?
Clean, oil lightly, store in the case.
