How to Dress a Grinding Wheel
Guide · Updated October 28, 2026
Truing makes the wheel round and flat to the spindle; dressing opens fresh, sharp grain. On a surface grinder one diamond does both, and how fast you cross the wheel decides the finish.
Check the ground size
Measure ground parts with a mic or height gage set from gage blocks. Check it with a mic you've verified against gage blocks; the free Gage Block Calculator builds the stack.
Step by step
- Ring test: Before mounting, tap the wheel lightly and listen for a clear ring; a dull thud means a crack, so scrap it.
- Check the speed: Make sure the wheel’s max RPM rating is above the spindle speed, and stand clear on startup.
- Set the diamond: Hold the diamond on the chuck, tilted 10–15° and pointing in the direction of wheel rotation.
- Position it: Place it slightly past the wheel centerline on the outgoing side so it cannot dig in.
- Touch off: Bring the wheel down until it just sparks on the diamond.
- Take light passes: Take 0.0005–0.001 in per pass across the full face, then a final pass with no downfeed.
- Rotate the diamond: Turn the diamond a little between dressings so it stays sharp.
Worked example
7 in wheel at 3450 RPM: surface speed ≈ 7 × 3450 / 3.82 ≈ 6,300 SFM, so the wheel must be rated for at least 3450 RPM. For a fine finish, dress at 0.0005 in down and traverse slowly, around 2–4 in/min across a 1/2 in wide wheel. For faster stock removal, traverse faster for a more open wheel.
Loading and burn
A loaded wheel looks shiny or smeared, and a burned part shows color. Dress again, traverse faster for a more open face, use coolant and take lighter downfeed. Use a softer or more open wheel for soft or gummy materials.
Truing vs dressing
Truing removes runout and shape errors. Dressing sharpens the grain. A wheel can be true but glazed, so dress whenever cutting gets slow or noisy.
Tips
- Speeds and downfeeds: grinding speeds and feeds.
- Check ground finish with surface finish basics.
- Hold parts on the magnetic chuck.
- Check parallelism with gage blocks.
FAQ
What angle should a wheel dressing diamond be?
About 10 to 15° tilted in the direction of wheel rotation.
How much do I take off when dressing?
About 0.0005 to 0.001 in per pass, finishing with a pass at no downfeed.
What is the difference between truing and dressing?
Truing makes the wheel round and flat; dressing sharpens the grain.
How often should I dress a wheel?
Whenever it loads, glazes, burns or the finish drops.
What is a ring test?
Tapping a vitrified wheel before mounting; a clear ring means no crack.
