How to Check a Machinist Square

Guide ยท Updated October 28, 2026

A machinist square (engineer's square) is only useful if it is square. A drop or a worn blade can throw it off, so check it on a schedule and after any knock.

Measure the gap

Slide gage blocks or feeler leaves into the gap to size it โ€” build exact values with the free Gage Block Calculator.

Step by step

  1. Clean: Wipe the square, the plate and any master.
  2. Flip test: Hold the stock against a straight edge or a parallel-sided bar and scribe a fine line along the blade. Flip the square and line it up with the line. Any gap at the top is twice the error.
  3. Light gap check: Stand the square and a cylinder square or master square on the surface plate, blades touching. Look toward a light: a wedge of light shows error.
  4. Size the gap: Slide feeler leaves or gage blocks into the gap at the top to measure it.
  5. Indicator method: Stand the square on the plate and run an indicator on a height gage up the blade. Zero first on a cylinder square to cancel the stand.
  6. Record: Note error over blade length (e.g., 0.0004 in over 6 in) and compare to the grade or your shop limit.

Worked example

Flip test on a 6 in square shows 0.002 in between the two scribed lines at the top. Error is half: 0.001 in over 6 in. That is fine for layout but not for inspection work.

Acceptable error

Inspection-grade squares are typically within about 0.0001 in per inch of blade; toolmaker squares tighter. Combination square heads are coarser โ€” see combination squares.

Tips

FAQ

How do you check if a machinist square is square?

Scribe a line along the blade against a straight edge, flip the square and compare. Any gap is twice the error. Or compare to a master on a surface plate.

What is the flip test?

Draw along the blade, flip the square over and draw again from the same edge. Two lines that diverge show the square is off by half the divergence.

How accurate should an engineer's square be?

Inspection squares are commonly within about 0.0001 in per inch of blade length. Check your supplier's grade and your shop's limit.

Can you fix an out-of-square square?

Solid squares can be lapped or reground by a toolmaker or calibration lab; cheap squares are usually replaced.

What is a cylinder square?

A precision cylinder with ends square to its axis, used as a master for checking squares and setups.
