How to Chase Threads
Guide ยท Updated October 28, 2026
Chasing a thread means running a tool through an existing thread to clean it up, finish it or deepen it. By hand that is a thread chaser file or die nut. On the lathe it means picking up the thread so the single-point tool lands exactly in the existing groove.
Check thread size
Measure pitch diameter with three wires or a thread mic, proved on gage blocks. The free Gage Block Calculator builds the stack.
Step by step
- Identify the thread: Check TPI or pitch with a pitch gage and the major diameter.
- Hand chasing: Run a die nut (not a cutting die) or thread file over damaged threads.
- Lathe setup: Set the gearbox to the TPI and mount the part true.
- Engage the half nut: Engage on the correct dial mark with the tool clear of the part.
- Stop over the thread: Stop the lathe with the tool over the thread, half nut still engaged.
- Align the tool: Move the compound and cross slide until the tool sits centered in the groove; zero the dials.
- Take light passes: Take light cuts and check with the nut or gauge.
Worked example
Deepening a 3/4-10 thread that is tight: three-wire reading is 0.7900 in and the target is 0.7820 in, so pitch diameter must drop 0.0080 in. With the compound at 29.5ยฐ, infeed on the compound โ PD change รท 2 รท cos 29.5ยฐ = 0.0080 รท 2 รท 0.870 = 0.0046 in. Take it in 0.002, 0.002 and 0.0006 in passes.
Using the compound to pick up
Adjusting the compound shifts the tool sideways along the thread a little as it moves in, which is how you align to the groove without disengaging the half nut.
Common problems
A double cut means the tool was not centered. A wrong lead means the gearbox setting was off. Damaged threads chased with a cutting die can be cut undersize.
Tips
- Wires: measure threads with three wires.
- Gages: thread gages.
- Single point: cut threads on a lathe.
FAQ
What is thread chasing?
Running a tool through an existing thread to clean or finish it.
Die nut or die?
A die nut restores threads without cutting much; a die cuts.
How do I pick up a thread on the lathe?
Engage the half nut, stop over the thread and align the tool with compound and cross slide.
Why did I get a double thread?
The tool was not aligned to the groove.
How do I check the result?
Thread gage, nut or three wires.
